The line item grid (LIG) is usually sorted by the document number of the line items within each configuration, but it's possible to get a different default sorting.

In fact the LIG is generally sorted by the sub doc attribute _sequence_number. This attribute has a property "Order By:" where you can select a custom sub doc attribute. If this is done the LIG will be sorted by the values of the custom attribute. The sequence numbers will be generated automatically from this sorting and have no duplicates or gaps in the order.
