Efficient way to manage item numbering and manufacture of finished goods that run in different sizes

Summary:

We manufacture and sell finished goods by sizes. what is the best way to setup item# and item structure/work definition

Content (required):

We manufacture and sell finished goods by sizes. FG is sold in cases . Each case with 10 boxes of 200 units in each box. The component qty for each size (glove) is different in item structure/BOM. If we define a unique SKU# for each combination, it becomes a big number. Each unique SKU will need its own item structure and work definition.

Is there any trick to avoid this?

Examples - A Blue gloves, of 0.27 thick fabric, Standard edition - in 5 sizes (XS,S,M,L,XL) .
