Minimum Days to Complete field

I'm creating a required learning initiative and I'm being asked to input a "Minimum Days to Complete" and it has a note - If a learner has less than the specified minimum due days to complete a learning initiative, they will be assigned a due date in the following year.
I'm really thrown off by the "Assigned a due date in the following year" I've tried to find this in documentation, but nothing describes this actual field.
