Ability to reduce cost for a returned item?

Hi All,

We have a requirement where items once returned need to be maintained at a lower cost. Items are costed using average costing method. The item can be both serialized/non-serialized. The standard items being shipped should maintain the original cost but once returned they need to be maintained at a lower cost for any future shipments. Ideally this should not affect the other shipments having same items and they should not be transacted at the lower cost. Would appreciate if any one had a similar requirement and what was the potential solution applied?
