Can Universal applications access Connections?

Summary

I may be missing something, the product seems to disallow Connections for Universal applications? Is this a fact? If so, why?

Content (required):

I have a Universal application and Connections are not allowed. I examined Universal applications in the EDM sample application, they also are blocked from Connections. Is this in fact how the product is designed? If so, why? It makes no sense to me.

I want to Export/Extract to Oracle Object Storage via a Connection.
