Source data to Narrative Reporting from RDBMS

Is there a way to source data directly from RDBMS to Narrative reporting?

I'm aware of the alternate options like:

  1. Create a model and load metadata and data files from RDBMS (Tedious)
  2. Create a custom cube in planning and source data
  3. Source data from Excel using doclets.

Any leads are appreciated.
