Usage of lists to initialize variables in AP approval rules spreadsheet

Can someone provide examples how to create variables in the approval spreadsheet similar to creating variables in BPM. Is lists sheet be used to create variables?

Context is we are deriving cost center dynamically in the BPM Expense approval using variables and assigned to the custom role's users defined with role code same as cost center value to avoid multiple rules creation. Would like to achieve the same in the approval spreadsheet.
