Delay in calc manager to recognize new Smart Lists/Variables?

I created a new SmartList that I would like to use in a variable. I refreshed the database after creating it since it wasn't showing in the list of available SmartLists to select in a variable set up in Calc Manager but it still isn't appearing in the list. I created 2 new variables in Calc Manager and added them to a business rule and when trying to run the business rule it is giving me the error that the business rule is "Unable to retrieve variable".
