Error when creating RMA for PTO model using Rest API

We are trying to create an RMA for PTO model using salesOrdersForOrderHub rest api.

Facing error "You must include a reference order when you return a configured item or cancel a configured service."

Providing the original sales order (which is shipped and closed) details in the RMA api call. Is this a misleading error or how to solve this. Please share a sample JSON request payload to create RMA for PTO model.
