Where can I find information on permissions required to call REST APIs?

We are starting to explore using REST APIs for some automation and custom application development. While we are able to use some of the REST APIs out of box, some are giving us 401 and 404 errors. I'm suspecting for the 401 errors these are related to role permissions, but I cannot find a reference online that will help me correlate a REST API endpoint to a specific permission needed. Any advice would be helpful.
