Updating custom widget from custom extension

Looking for best practice in updating custom widget that is in custom extension

We had a custom widget created for our Customer Profile screen.  The widget was upload from the dcu using the ccw command.  We now have to update one of the template files.  I downloaded the widget source code and updated the code as needed.  My thought was I would just use the dcu push command for that file path to update.  However, when I try that it errors saying the file does not exist.  I have been researching this extensively and the closet I can find to best practice is to reload the .zip file for the entire widget that
