Converting BOM Configuration to System Configuration

My BOM Configuration works. I would like to make it a System Configuration to be able to add multiple models. When I add the the model path to the Item Def DataTable, the bill of materials array no longer maps items, it maps the parent itemid over and over again. I'm not using bundles.

I would like to see the system configuration navigator in the configurator and be able to add multiple models to a configuration. However, after reading and re-reading the doc on system config, I'm not seeing what changes to standard bom mapping need to be done to make it work. I added the model path to the item def table - I can't tell by the help if I need the model path on every item in the BOM or just the model, or both. I've tried it all ways and the results are still the same.
