Setting Asset Picker value based on another field

The Asset value in the asset picker needs to be defaulted to a particular asset based on a custom field. The value provided in the custom field is a unique value which will be used by the client to identify a specific asset/equipment. We use the UEF framework. We are able to set values for other similar requirements for other fields. But even though we set the IBAssetId to the correct value, the asset picker doesnt show the value
