Check Ins or Contextual Notes?

We are looking for business user feedback on utilizing Check Ins verse Contextual Notes for progress updates on goals throughout the goal plan period.

In Classic UI, our organization was utilizing the "comments" box for tracking progress on performance goals and career development goals. Now that we have moved to Responsive UX we are looking at contextual notes and/ or check ins but are curious on which to use? Do we need to enable both? We have read through documents and posts, but would love any direct feedback between the two.

We hold one on one meetings between leaders and associates at a minimum on a monthly basis. We were also looking at a way to utilize the performance tool for the associate and leader to set agenda and track notes of those discussions. We are leaning towards utilizing one check in document for the Goal Plan Period for the leader and associate to document your monthly meetings and progress on their goals. Should we still enable contextual notes? What are other companies utilizing to document meetings with leaders and progress on goals throughout the year? We want this feedback to
